100 Greatest? Books for Children
Submitted by hmccue on Fri, 02/17/2012 - 2:24pm
Last week, Scholastic’s Parent & Child magazine released its list of “100 Greatest Books for Kids” and the uproar can be heard over the Wild Things here at RCPL. (We think it’s a crime that Make Way for Ducklings by Robert McCloskey didn’t make the list, by the way.) Everyone has their favorites and it hurts not to see “your” books on the list. Aren’t they, too, the greatest? Children’s books impact us like no other books that we read in our lifetimes. They become our friends, form our opinions and help us become the adults we eventually grow up to be. How can those books not be deeply personal? As children’s librarians, we enjoy the “wild rumpus” of it all because it reminds us that people are still passionate about the books we give our children. It allows us to talk about what makes a great children’s book the greatest. These lists remind us of childhood, create a reading “to-do-list” with our children and get us talking about Frog and Toad, Charlotte and Harry. In case you’re wondering, we have our own favorite list created by Anita Silvey, former editor of the Horn Book and an expert in the field of children’s literature. We have included 25 of her 100 Best Books for Children below. So, check out both lists and tell us what you think. Thanks to children’s books, we know that we can fight, storm off and come back to find supper waiting and it’s “still hot.” Click on the book cover or title to be taken to the catalog, or click on the Amazon link if you'd like to find out more information about the book or to buy it from Amazon and help support the library!
